In the beginning, there was an empty lot.
IT ALL STARTED IN 2014
The Concordia City Commission was looking for ways to help downtown businesses increase sales and ways to fill empty storefronts. There were 5 lots at the corner of 6th and Broadway; remnants of a fire that ravished the buildings that once stood in their place. The Commission purchased the lots and began working with an architectural firm to design a public space. On June 10th, 2014, close to 200 residents attended a public meeting where they determined what components mattered to them the most in a public space. In the end, they helped design a facility to be a key meeting place for friends, neighbors, family, and guests.
The City of Concordia welcomes you to the Broadway Plaza.
"Cultures and climates differ all over the world but people are the same. They'll gather in public if you give them a good place to do it."
Jan Gehl
The Broadway Plaza is the City of Concordia's premier outdoor public event center and home to 100-150 events each year. A gateway to Concordia's downtown shopping, dining, and entertainment district, the Plaza serves to assist the local economic development within the City while providing a public space for our residents to gather and help foster a greater sense of community.
